First, with the release of the latest patch, some of the major critcisms raised in older reviews have been addressed. In particular, good force feedback support is now part of the game. Beyond that, there are peformance improvements, especially on certain graphics boards Nvidia in my experience.
So, if you are going to purchase the game or happen to already own it , make sure to get the patch! Anyway, back to the review. I have spent a lot of time playing Grand Prix 3, so F1 has some pretty big shoes to fill. Overall it does quite a good job, but isn't a clear winner over GP3.
Starting with the handling of the cars: F1 does a very good job in this area. The updated F1 cars seem to handle as best I can tell : much like their real life counterparts. The cars are very "twitchy" and will come around on you instantly if you aren't careful. They also require very precise steering and throttle control to achieve top lap times. I found that I was "catching" the car and making many more steering adjustments in this game than GP3. General gameplay is fuller and more refined than GP3: - Racing in a Grand Prix takes you through all of the practice sessions, not a subset of them.
The communication is helpful, but rather predictable. It is up to you to pull the car out and put it on the track. While these don't enhance gameplay, they certainly make good eye and ear candy. If you have a higher end system you are in for a real treat. The cars are well detailed, but the detail of the courses is what really sets this game apart from GP3.
The course surroundings are well done, but the realism of the tracks themselves is really great. It seems like every bump has been included.
The GP3 tracks seemed very flat in comparision and the additional bumps made some tracks a very different driving experience. I also found that some tracks were more difficult because of their detailed models. For example, Australia contains all of the runoffs roads found on the real circuit.
Differentiating between these and the real track at high speed can be tricky. The area where this game comes up short is in car tuning. It has very detailed tuning menus, but no way of gathering data about what your car is doing. GP3 allows you to look over graphs of your car's performance to help make adjustments. In F1 it is up to you to determine how the car feels.
